Because the majority of San Luis Obispo’s economy is based on tourism everything costs more than it would elsewhere. That makes it hard for a person who is homeless to get a firm foothold and advance out of homelessness and back into the mainstream society.
Since SLO is also the home of Cal Poly University, most of the jobs that become available are usually part time jobs. Full time employment is hard to come by and trying to get ahead with a part time job is impossible. Because most of the homeless are unskilled laborers, that makes it more difficult for them to have a chance at getting ahead. (more…)
