Yesterday, mid-morning, I was at one of the local shopping centers heading toward the Von’s and I spotted a dark colored SUV. In the passenger seat, standing with its feet on the door, was a small dog looking intently toward the supermarket entrance/exit. To me it was apparent that it was waiting for its human to come out.

Although I was there when the owner of the SUV finally came out, I can will imagine that this pet was overjoyed to see its human companion. Pets are like that, you know – they’ll love us no matter what. They are highly non-judgmental in regards to their loyalty to us.   (more…)

Every so often I reach a point where I begin feeling this despair that, as a nation, we just don’t get it when it comes to our nations homeless and our need to reach out and find a way of helping them. Sometimes it seems to me that no one really cares that there are literally millions of persons who are homeless – and that more than 1/3 of them are children.

Yesterday afternoon while talking with a gentleman I know the subject of freedom of choice entered the conversation. At one point he excused himself to go to the bathroom and I picked up a book that had been laying on the couch next to me. It turned out to be Nicholas Sparks’ "The Notebook."

I’ve never read the book, and although it as been turned into a motion picture, I’ve never seen that either. So, while waiting for this gentleman to return from the bathroom I began flipping through the pages at just reading at random. Almost at once I came across one sentence whose reality stuck out in my mind straightaway:

"A person can get used to anything, if given enough time."

Out In The Cold

Over the past few nights, the weather has been getting colder. I don’t know if it’s just a cold front moving through the area or if it is just winter. It’s probably a bit of both. Regardless, as it turns to late evening it’s become a task to stay warm.

Because of the drop in temperature I keep thinking about all of those homeless who aren’t able to get into the local homeless shelter because of the lack of available beds. Some are adult men and women of various ages and, unfortunately, some of them are children. Those are the thoughts going through my mind.   (more…)
