This is an "interesting" time of year for me where this blog is concerned.

Halloween is behind us. Thanksgiving is just around the corner. And Christmas is not too far behind.

It’s also the time of year when I seem to get quite a bit of "extra" email in my inbox.   (more…)

I’ve been absent from the blogosphere for a little over a month due to some ongoing medical issues which required attention. Judging from the numbers of emails in my inbox, quite a number of folks noticed my absence and sent their well wishes.

Once I began powering up my computer again, I undertook the task of answering those emails. After that was taken care of, I turned my attention to trying to catch up on what’s been happening in the world at large – and of course, what has been happening in the area of homelessness around the nation.   (more…)

In late May of 2008, I wrote a post called: Why Help The Homeless?

It was my attempt to answer one of the most frequent and common inquires this blog receives: "Why should we help the homeless?"

In the end, my answer was simply that we should help the homeless because it’s the right thing to do.

To be sure, my answer was an altruistic one. But, when all is said and done, showing basic compassion to our fellow human being – regardless of their social standing within the community – is the clearest sign of humane society.   (more…)

On Saturday, the National Coalition for the Homeless (NCH) made pubic its latest report: Hate, Violence, and Death on Main Street USA 2008.

In a press release, the NCH highlighted some of the findings in the report.

News media across the nation picked up on the NCH press release, with some of them running headlines stating the Florida ranked first in the number of hate crimes perpetrated against the homeless during 2008.   (more…)

It irritates me to no end when I read that some local government comes to the consensus that homelessness is an issue which should be addressed in their community, but then do nothing.

Such is the case in Merced, California.

Last week, the Merced City Council held a "special session" to discuss the city’s goals and priorities.   (more…)
